I have a woe. Have a Volvo for your time.
The sexiest Volvo in quite some time
My 2010 S40 T5 R-Design was recently in for its 60k service (at about 66k because previous owners maybe? Warning didn’t come on at 60k. Anyhow); we took it to Rickenbaugh Volvo. They did the standard 60k stuff and told me I needed new brakes in the near future.
The near future happened. Shortly after getting the car back, the brakes started getting spongier and spongier until the wife tells me that it’s like there’s no brakes at all (I don’t drive the car so I don’t know how quickly or how badly) . I order some Akebono ceramics and replace the fronts. No change. Instead of installing the rears I send the car over to Voltek (because our experience with Rickenbaugh was less than acceptable to be honest). I called today to give more information. The technician asks me “Who did the brake pads?” I says “Me.” He responds “On the rears, did you press the pistons in or did you screw them in?” I said “Well I haven’t done the rears yet, why?” “ Because the pads are new ” he states.
WTF point number one there.
He says he’s bled the brakes four times, getting air each time. He’s worried the master cylinder has gone south. He’s worried even more because he stated that in his career, he hasn’t replaced a single master cylinder on “...these late model forties” and it seems like a longshot that that component has toasted at such low miles.
I’m going to contact Rickenbaugh and see if I can get any information from them, but I seem to remember them stating that no work was done to the brakes. The fact that the rear pads look new at ~70k where the fronts were 70% worn (give or take) is rather disconcerting. In the mean time, anyone with experience on these models have any thoughts or discussion points?

I’m sorry. I have no idea what you just wrote. This huge boner I got after scrolling down to the sexmobile has cut off blood flow to my brain and made reading things impossible.
With that said, Good luck/sorry to hear that/congratulations!/don’t worry you’ll pull through it.

Not enough handbrake turns.
But thats just my professional opinion.

Proportioning valve or ABS system problem? Internal valve leaking for the lines going to the rear so that’s why the pads look new as there is no pressure to push the pads to the rotor.
Any leaks under the car?

Hmmm. It can go many Volvo specific ways. Not enough time to type this all on kinjaland. Shoot me a email please. ulysses@starmotorcars.com. I have theories.

So I’m assuming that you haven’t gotten any ABS warnings or anything like that on the dash either?
That’s very strange. Maybe you have a leak somewhere?

No lights, no warnings, no nothing. The tech at Voltek is going over the system to see if there are any leaks. So far, there have been none.
